Muzeum Plakatu - Poster Museum Travel Reviews

Sep 05, 2007
MUZEUM PLAKATU - Poster Museum. This museum opened in 1968 and was the world's first poster museum. It is worth a visit which can be combined with visiting the Wilanów Palace and Gardens. It is a pleasant bike ride away from downtown Warsaw, but can also be reached easily by car or public transportation. Located at Wilanów, in the same park as the Palace and Gardens. It has one of the largest collections of art posters in the world. If you decide to visit the palace, it is important to get there somewhat early in the day because I was informed that there is a maximum number of visitors allowed during the day. I tried to take friends last week and we were too late! :-(
The posters on display when I visited the museum were mostly from soviet times and dealt mainly with travel and tourism in Poland during that era. It was like being in a time machine for a moment, seeing how Poland was presented as a tourist destination during the 50's, 60's and 70's. Polish poster art is famous world-wide, and many of the posters on display are rare collectors items. A beautiful poster can also be a great souvenir that will remind you of your stay in Poland.

andrewmarshall says: Warsaw is a very old town with a ton of history, that was all destroyed in WWII and rebuilt. Personally I liked it less than Krakow, but I think that was mainly because I loved living in the dorms (see Krakow entry). Rynek (Main square) was beautiful and was fantastically restored to look exactly li...
