Museumsdorf Cloppenburg Reviews
Preserving Agricultural Heritage of Northern Germany Aug 28, 2014
Museumsdorf Cloppenburg is a collection of historical farmhouses and other rural buildings in Cloppenburg, Germany.
It is located close to the city centre, less than 1 kilometre away from the railway station, and offers a lot of free parking lots. Entrance fee is 7 EUR per adult, 3 EUR per student, and 14.50 EUR for a whole family. With 250,000 visitors each year, it is one of the most popular museums in Lower Saxony.
The museum village was opened in 1936, and it was the first museum which was focused on rural culture. Over the last decade, a lot of rural buildings were added to the museum.
The Zehntscheune (tithe barn) from Aerzen, once used for storing grain tributes, is the largest building within the village. Built in 1561, it was relocated to Cloppenburg in 1980. Today, it is used as exhibition hall of the museum village.
The timbered church was built in 1699 and relocated in 1977. Next to the church, there is a small timbered school from Renslage, built in 1751.
One castle, Arkenstede, was built in 1684 and relocated in 1937.
The biggest farmyard, the Wehlburg, was built in 1750 and relocated in 1975. With 25 hectares (0.25 square kilometers), it was once the centre of a large estate.
However, this village also offers minor buildings, which were inhabited by craftsmen, tenants and servants, as well as barns and stables.
This village also offers a Dorfkrug (pub) which serves some local dishes. Prices are a little bit higher than usual.
As a tribute to living history, some farm animals (horses, pigs, sheep, goats, geese, chicken) are living within the village.
Museumsdorf Cloppenburg offers a wonderful insight into a recent past which has already gone in today's dwellings. Many signs are bilingual (German and English) or even trilingual (Dutch).
