Since a few weeks I am the proud owner of a museumkaart, and I am very happy with it. This card encourages (repeatedly) museumvisits because it gives unrestrained access to over 400 museums in the Netherlands. (In incidental cases museums can charge an extra admittance to enter a special exhibition).

The card can be bought in the bigger museums, or online for 55 euro (27,50 for persons under 19), plus a registration fee of 5 euro (in 2015). Visiting 4 or 5 of the bigger museums usually gets you even. The validity of the card is one year from the purchase date (when bought at a museum) or from the first use of the card (when bought online).

Amsterdam alone has dozens of museums, so if you are visiting the Netherlands and especially Amsterdam, buying a card on even short trips is good value when you plan to visit several museums. Also Leiden, Rotterdam, Den Haag and Haarlem has some nice museums to visit, while ofcourse museums can be found in other parts of the country as well.

A complete list of the participating museums can be browsed on the website - unfortunately this is only in Dutch.

I still long for the public transport strippenkaart, this chip-system we now have is junk.

The Museumkaart costs 35 Euros, and gets you free entrance to 400-ish museums across the Netherlands. Most of the museums I've been to charge about 10 Euros entrance, so you'll break even fairly quickly if you're here for any length of time. I've started to save already, although admittedly I am slightly mad about going to museums. The website is

and there are other sites that'll give you an English summary. You can buy them in any of the museums where you might want to use them, and they last for a year.
