Museum of Tropical Queensland Townsville Reviews
The Museum about Something Else Jun 04, 2009
As far as museums go this one was about in the middle. If you're really into the historical aspect of Tropical Queensland then give it a go. But bearing in mind, when I went there, there were only 3 separate areas of the museum; Rainforest, Pandora, Dinosaurs, and a fourth mini one called MindZone which is for kids.
The Pandora one is quite interesting, and takes you through the journey of one of the most famous ships that ran aground just off the coast of Queensland many many years ago. There's plenty of memorabilia, videos, and other info to keep you occupied here for a while, however if you're not into ships then you won't like this part.
The next section is all about dinosaurs, and after having a bit of a look I realised that more than half of it doesn't have anything to do with Tropical Queensland at all. Interesting perhaps, but not relevant in the slightest. They do have this cool interactive display where you get a brush and have to uncover your own fossil or eggs, however.
Final display is about the rainforest, and mangroves, swamps etc, and is quite interesting - especially the deep sea part with the real creatures. This was definately the highlight of the museum, and they made it right up at the top, too.
In general, if you are visiting Townsville it's worth to have a look - but just be warned that only half of it actually has anything to do with its namesake.
The cost is $12 for adults, $7 for kids - but if you live in Townsville it's free! You can get a family pass for $30 which is 2 adults and 3 kids. There's also a museum shop for souveniers, and a cafe for the parents to have a coffee while the kids play with the dinosaurs.
