Former city gate and prison Dec 25, 2014
The Gevangenpoort is a former gate and prison. The museum is situated in the entire building and surrounds the court yard. It shows weaponry, torture devices and also some objects of former prisoners. Some of the devices have been used for real.

It is adviced to take a tour, instead of walking free. Do take this tour, I've done both and the tour will give you much more information and you'll be able to see places you are not allowed to visit on your own. During the tour you'll see the prison spaces (cells) for the poor and "normal" people. These cells are made out of wood and could host up to 12 people or even more. There is also one cell for the rich people, this cell is bigger and you were alowed to bring in your own furniture, food and even wine. Cornelis de Witt was imprisond here. He was later lynched with his brother.

Luckely it's not being used anymore... Now everybody has their own cell, or has maybe one roommate.
