Marino Marini in Zwolle!!! Nov 02, 2013
I visited ‘Museum De Fundatie’ in Zwolle once before, in 2010 (see my review, you can find it in my blog ‘Day trips and short visits 2010).

The museum is located at the Blijmarkt 20 in Zwolle. In the area you’ll find paid parking. From the railway station it is about 10 to 15 minutes walking. The entrance fee is 9 euro.

The museum has a second location: Kasteel Het Nijenhuis in Heino. The entrance fee is 9 euro.

A combination ticket to visit both locations is 12 euro. And the Dutch ‘Museumkaart’ is valid. When you have this card the entrance is for free, you only have to register when you enter the locations.

For more information see: (in 2010 it was only in Dutch, in the meantime the website is in Dutch and in English).

Well, as said, I visited the museum before. Since then the expanded the former palace with a remarkable ‘eye’ or ‘cloud’. Two more floors ( 1,000 m2 extra), the outside is coated with 55,000 blue and white tiles. And it has a big window, overlooking the historic center. I can recommend the coffee bar up there. Great coffee (although in paper cups), great view!

The permanent collection of the museum includes art of Vincent van Gogh, Karel Appel, Paul Citroen, William Turner, Constant Permeke etc.

Until March 16, 2014 there is a real interesting exhibition of Marino Marini, ‘painter, draughtsman, sculptor’. I only knew Marini for his sculptures, and I was surprised by his paintings!

I took some photos, just to get an impression. Much more to see at the exhibition.

Until November 17 there is also an exhibition of Pieter Henket , ‘The way I see it’ and of Jeroen Krabbé , ‘Dum Vivimus Vivamus’.

The second location of the museum is Kasteel (castle) Het Nijenhuis. Located in Heino. By train it is only 10 minutes from Zwolle. From the railway station Heino it is about 20 minutes walking to the castle.

Kasteel Het Nijenhuis has a great sculpture garden. The interior of the castle is interesting. Until January 5th 2014 they have an exhibition of ‘Aristocrats in art: Agnes van den Brandeler & Charlotte van Pallandt’.

Museum De Fundatie Oct 29, 2010
Our main reason for visiting De Fundatie was the exhibition by Jeroen Krabbé, a Dutch actor and painter. He made 9 paintings about the story of his grandfather Abraham Reiss. He was a jew and very successful in the diamond industry. However, the recession in 1929 made him lose a lot of money. During the second world war, he was deported first to Westerbork and later to the deathcamp Sobibor, where he was killed upon arrival. The story is horrible to hear and read about, but the paintings give a good view of it. Krabbé used different kinds of structures in his paintings and let his grandfather pop out of every painting, by making him white. The paintings really tell you the story and show a lot of emotion.

Besides this exhibition, there was also an exhibition of George Grosz, which showed his work in the form of drawings, sketchbooks, images in newspapers, all about the German society during the interbellum.

Furthermore, one painting by Vincent van Gogh was on display: Le blute-fin.

The museum is quite large and has an extremely modern interior. The art displayed is a combination of old, modern and contemporary. There are a few statues as well. Examples are art works by Paul Citroen, Karel Appel and Edgar Degas.

I can recommend Museum De Fundatie and especially the exhibition by Jeroen Krabbé, which can be seen until December 5, 2010. The entrance price is with €7,50 very reasonable.
