Its construction began from 1255. This palace was the residence of the Podestà who ruled the city from the end of XIII century until 1502. From this year it became the seat of the Consiglio di Giustizia, the police and was also a prison. Bargello; the name of this building comes from the title given to the chief of the police.

Todays this palace houses an interesting museum wih sculptures and other artifacts. There you can see various masterpieces by Donatello, Michelangelo and other artists.

The Museo del Bargello is one of the most important museums in Florence. Primarily a collection of sculpture, the museum is home to some of the most famous pieces in the world, including Donatello's David. It also houses works by Brunelleschi, Michelangelo, and Cellini. In several rooms there are large collections of weapons, including early firearms, swords, suits of full plate armor, and other fighting gear. The Bargello was at one time a prison for the city state of Florence, but it has since been transformed into one of the most wonderful castle-museums in the world!
