Musée national d'histoire naturelle Luxembourg Reviews
National Museum of Natural History - 'natur musée' Sep 06, 2016
I quite enjoy visiting the natur musée, which translates as nature museum. This is also the term that the locals use instead of its long official name.
Their current temporary exhibition, "Orchidées, cacao et colibris – Naturalistes et chasseurs de plantes luxembourgeois en Amérique latine" chronicles the scientific expeditions of Luxembourgish naturalists and plant hunters in Latin America, and was organized because of the 125th anniversary of the Luxembourgish naturalist society (Société des naturalistes luxembourgeois). The exhibition layout was well thought trough as it gives the different scientists each a seperate area with excerpts from their diaries, newspaper articles, explanations about what types of plants and animals they discovered. I found it interesting to see the original taxidermy animals that were brought back to Luxembourg during the 19th century by these explorers. An added bonus were the audio buttons where you could hear the sounds of the animals. One of the staff members kindly pointed several buttons out and gave us some additional information about snakes, ants and termites. Unfortunately, the museum did not publish a catalog for this show but they made a booklet for children "Mäi Reesbuch" (My Travel Diary) about the explorers and the things they discovered.
At the moment only the temporary exhibition is accessible as the permanent collection is getting renovated and changed.
