Musée Massena - (Massena Art & History Museum) Nice Reviews
Worth a visit - it's free!!!! Apr 13, 2011
This beautiful building overlooks the spectacular Promenade Anglais. We actually came across this museum purely by accident after wandering around the side streets off the main promenade. Given that when we enquired as to what the entrance fee was and told that is was free how could we not take the opportunity to look around this grand piece of architecture.
The building itself was built between 1898 and 1901 and in 1921 became the Museum of Art and History, the gardens are reputed to be the work of a landscape gardener who also designed those at the casino in Monte Carlo.
The exhibits take up a few floors of the museum so there is a lot of stairs to climb. The history of Nice is portrayed beautifully through paintings, sculptures, articfacts, books and fashion. Rooms are also dedicated to the musicians, writers and painters who lived and worked in Nice.
Although the signs and explantions to all the exhibits are in French this did not cause too much of a problem.
