Musée Maillol Banyuls-sur-Mer Reviews
Maillol,a child of the soil, master of female nudes. Jul 15, 2009
Aristide Maillol, born in Banyuls sur mer in 1861 was first a painter and then a sculptor who was only recognized in his forties when he came back from Paris to Banyuls.Sometimes called the "Cézanne of sculpture" because like Cézanne he smoothed the way to abstraction. His voluptuous, compact female figures had a great influence on the European sculpture. Thanks to Dina Vierny( who died this year),his last model for the last ten years of his life, one can see some of Maillol works like bronze, terracotta, drawings and paintings.
He died in Banyuls in 1944 at the age of 83 in a car accident. He is burried in the garden of the Museum which was a farm La Métairie, his tomb is topped with his statue La Méditerranée.
In the town of Banyuls, there are several main works of the sculptor like the War Memorial,La Jeune Fille Allongée,L'île de France sans Bras...
