Munising is a small town in the U.P. that is about an hours drive east from Marquette. Despite being small there is plenty to do in the area! In town you can find boat tours of the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and also a glass bottom boat tour of some of the shipwrecks in the area. Outside of town, on NFHighway 13, you'll find a small airstrip where you can take a plane ride over the area. On the western side of town there is a ferry to Grand Island where you can bike or hike the island as well as some campsites(permits usually needed for camping). On the eastern side of town you can find Munising falls and further down the road from there is Sand Point; a shallow beach area that is very beautiful and a little warmer than most of the beaches Superior has to offer.

If you are looking to see more of the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore area, head east out of town to Highway 28 and follow the brown signs. The closest beach on the Pictured Rocks is Miners then followed by Chapel which requires a short hike (only a few miles) into. To get hiking maps of the area head on over to the Forest Service office right off the main street in town.

The town doesn't have much to offer for restaurants and a few places for accommodations.

Bayshore Park & Marina - Gateway to Legends & Memories
posted by:

If you're a summertime tourist, Bayshore Marina is likely the trap that snags you and keeps you in the quaint town of Munising for a few days.  Though the park has seemingly shrunken as I've grown older, it still lures the curious traveler in with celebrations and as a mysterious gateway to what lies on Lake Superior. Independence Day is by far the time when the most action takes place in the park, and in the city all together.  The park is crammed with vendor booths selling everyt...

A trip to the UP
posted by:
Jun 22, 2007
A couple of weeks ago some friends (Marcin, Gretel, Tiffany, Sam) and I decided to do a weekend trip to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. First we wanted to go to Cancun for an extended weekend, but this did not work out as Gretel got a new Position in Germany and was short on time. So we fell back on camping and hiking near Lake Superior. We left Friday around 2pm with fantastic weather and a car packed to the top with food and equipment. The drive took us about 6 hours but we arrived b...

Pictured Rocks
posted by:
Jun 01, 2007 - Jun 13, 2007
So we went on the Pictured Rocks tour. I was really lucky because it was a nice, calm day on the water. (A tendency for vertigo and a rocking boat don't mix well) There wasn't a cloud in the sky, and there was a nice breeze blowing off of Lake Superior. I did get a sunburn, though. But I was ok with it, cuz I needed some color on my face. lol.
