And were off to Munich!
posted by:

Two girls didn't care about the weather forecast so that morning they went out wearing coats while everyone else was wearing light sweaters and even just t-shirts.  They had some heavy breakfast though, just trying to make most of what they paid for the hostel which was 100 euros for the sh*tty room. Please blame Phydie for doing the booking! *growls as I remember having to pay 50euros just for sleep* I barely remember the details of this trip but I'll try my best. Don't worry...

2006 Liver Olympics
posted by:
Sep 15, 2006
Drunken European Vacation aka Oktoberfest aka Munich Tried To Kill Us aka Liver Olympics 2006 has come to a close.  I am happy to report that the team has arrived home and mostly in one piece.  I am sure we have all increased our beer drinking tolerances to ungodly limits which will surely cost us small fortunes at American bars as the beers here are much smaller and contain much lower levels of alcohol.  It will take much more to "do the trick" than it used to. ...

A new city and new friends!
posted by:
May 12, 2007 - Jul 07, 2007
Today was the day that we were signed up for the tour of the Neuschwanstein castle. Unfortunately we had to be up at 7:30 in order to get to the train station on time and we didn't get back to the hostel until 4:30am. So I was very much hung over/still drunk and it was very hard to actually get up and make it into the shower and to the train station. But luckily we did make it:) We had 4 bitchy room mates from Toronoto who got mad when we woke up because their one friend got angry if she didn...

Munich museum girl

Those of you who have been to the Alte Pinakothek, the old arts museum--not old building, old art--in Munich, might remember that you walk in right in the middle of it, and the paintings are mostly upstairs to both sides. Right at the entrance is the gift shop, which I figured I'd leave until the end, so I went up the stairs on the left side. It took me about two hours to go through all those paintings, and I was getting tired, mostly my eyes. So when I came down to get to the other side, I d...

Oktoberfest -- the real deal!
posted by:
Jan 23, 2007 - Oct 03, 2007
Lots of stuff in Munich is closed on Monday, but in spite of that, I still didn't have any trouble finding non-Oktoberfest things to do on my last day in the city. I've reviewed a range of sites below.

An Adolescents View on Munich and Its Outlying Principalities
posted by:
Jul 15, 1992
...Munich freakin rocks!   I can't even comment on the principalities.  In fact, I'd be hard pressed to say that Munich even has prinicpalities.  Actually, I think Germany as a whole shies away from the concept of principalities.  I just liked the way it rolls off your tongue.  Prin-ci-pal-it-ies...very pleasing to the ear.  Regardless, I will make a concerted effort not to include words that I am not sure of the definition.  No promises, tho...

Munich and the quest for the Beer Garden sign.
posted by:
Mar 28, 2007 - May 25, 2007
We had to leave Prague today which was sad because it really is a cool city, another place I'd like to spend more time in. We were headed back into Germany today and would be spending the night in Munich. Before I had left for vacation I had been given a mission by my friend to look for a metal beer garden sign for him to hang on his deck. Of course, I had forgotten all about this mission until we were going to Munich when I only had 2 days left to find the sign. The ...

Arrival in Germany
posted by:
Oct 30, 2007 - Nov 02, 2007
We spent the day sight seeing around town. While walking to Marienplatz again to see it during the day, we went into St Michaels church, Michaelskirche. This is a Renaissance Church built in protests from the citizens in the late 1500's, mostly due to the fact that they tore several homes down to build it. It is very beautiful inside and very bright. After the church, we went to the end of the plaza and into the toy museum, Spielzeugmuseu...

As much as I hate to be a cliche... it had to be done.Living in Europe, right next to Munich and not seeing an Oktoberfest just would not have been right.I missed it last year as I had the joy of spending 3 weeks in the deserts of Libya. So I was determined to get there this year. I was fortunate enough to organise it to hook up with a couple of mates who are living in the Netherlands and so we all arranged to meet and hit the tents together.I didnt really know what to expect other than I'd be...

Returning to the 4 you München hostel from our full day of sightseeing, we picked up our bags from the luggage store and headed up to our new room on the fourth floor. We had been on the 2nd floor and were surrounded by a group of French children (at the worst age of children 16 to 17, they think their adults but so are not!!!!), who had kept us awake with their teenage antics most of the previous night. The hostel had been really good about moving us and we suspect that it is a fa...

I wasnt expecting Munich to be the way it was. I half expected a smaller city like Berlin but I was far from wrong. As soon as I stepped off the train I could see that not only were the locals a different class of people but the tourists were also on a league of their own. I stayed in a hostel quite close to the train stn whichwas handy.  met a few peope in the rom who were also travelloing alone so we decided to hit the town for some grub and  few bevvies. We wandered around a litt...

Since we had to check out at 10am but our friends had booked a second night, we simply dragged all our stuff into their room and hung out until we had to leave around 12. Our train left for Vienna at 1.30pm and we even managed to find a compartment to ourselves! The only downside was the lack of air conditioning made it uncomfortable and I was still sick from the cold we all got on the last day. I slept almost all the way to Vienna and then we found out that our train was continuing on to Mun...
