After three business trips to India, I was finally able to branch out of New Delhi and see something else (I have side-tripped to Agra however). I began my journey with a tremendous 2-hour flight with Kingfisher Airlines (see my group Airline Advice for a more thorough account of this experience). I stayed at the JW Marriott for meeting I had over a 4-day period with the Commissioner of Police as well as his staff in order to assist in their modernization efforts following the terrorist attacks of 26/11. As we were out and about, we were able to duck over to the Gateway of India (very similar to India Gate in New Delhi) and have some coffee in the defiant Taj Mahal Hotel. We also cruised through the Film and Financial Districts and took a drive along the boardwalk, which is fancied to look like a necklace at night due to its semi-circle shape. Overall, I thought that the architecture in Mumbai was exceptionally beautiful and was much more organized than Delhi, which is not necessarily broken into districts other than the federal area containing all of the government agencies and housing.

Also that afternoon we had been invited to drink tea with an elderly, semi-retired Indian gentleman who was much travelled and quite charming. He regaled how he had travelled overland, hitch-hiking, from India to Germany on several occaisions.
Wednesday was escape day, and we caught the train to Jalgaon from where we would make a day trip to the caves at Ajanta.
