Mucking around in boats.... Newbury Reviews
Jul 15, 2006
I went Barging up the canal with some friends last July. There were 7 of us on a good sized barge complete with stove, fridge, toilet and seating.
We started in Newbury and sailed through the countryside to near Kintbury.
Went through about 7 locks, along with another couple who were sailing near us. Basically you go into the lock through huge gates and close them behind you. Then you go to the other huge gates in front of the boat and slowley wind the gates up and let the water in. When the boat is level to the canal in frount of you , you can sail out. This is how the boats go up and down hills.
It was so fun and everybody had a few drinks Pimms and lemonade with stawberries, cuccumber and mint.
Even had a drive and drove through Newbury on the way back. Only got stuck on the side once.
Find maps and stuff about barges on this site.
