Mtskheta is located at the confluence of the rivers Aragvi and Mtkvari, only about 25 kilometres north of Tbilisi. The surrounding area is dominated by green hills, which form a lovely setting for the town.
Mtshketha is said to be one of the oldest Georgian settlements. It was even the capital of the former Iberian Kingdom, hence the multitude of religious, cultural and historical sights, some of which are UNESCO World Heritage listed.
The main attraction in the old town centre is the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral from the early 11th century. Other worth seeing sights include the 5th century Antioch Church, the Samtavro Monastery and the Jvari Monastery, which sits atop of a hill just east of the town.
