Tanzania Serengeti May 03, 2011
The sarageti is such a beautiful place to go!. We hired a tour guide for 3 days. It was an overnight guide that included a personal chef with 3 meals a day. We drove through the seregeti and camped in a deserted place in the park. That was extremely scary, especially the fact that we just passed by a lion reserve. We even made our own tent. Overall the experience is a once in a life time!

On top of the world Mar 06, 2008
Lushoto, the nearest town from Mtae, has a fair amount of tourists. Yet only very few undertake the four hour bus trip to the beautiful village of Mtae. The drive itself is amazing, through rainforest, small towns and steep slopes covered with cabbage fields. From far one can see Mtae approaching on top of a mountain, steep drops 1500 metres down into the valley on two sides. From Mtae Mti one can even look as far as Kenya. The people here have been pretty cut off from the rest of the world, which makes it just that bit more exciting. People are still excited seeing a European and most of the times we found ourselves surrounded by groups of children. We were lucky to get to know one of the local guys named Joseph. He is one of the most honest guys I have met, he also spoke Eglish and showed us every aspect of his life. The days we spent there were filled with fun in the Mecuti Bar where the toilet is the bush by the front door, the local pub, very plain, but good African food in the Mwivano Restaurant and also visited an Easter ceremony in the church followed by a football match. An old school friend of Joseph is Idi the witchdoctor, who was happy to answer any question we asked and actually gave me a bit of the creeps... Joseph's grandfather is a herbalist and showed us how to make his special medicine that is good for excema, colds, coughs, stomach upset, heart problems etc etc. And he walks with his 80 years of age - he thinks - three times a week 14 km to the closest market to sell it. At the local school we watched as 500 children danced and sang to start another day. We only stayed there for just over a week, but it felt like we had lived there for quite while.

We stayed at Joseph's house, but there are guest-houses with simple, yet efficient, facilities. If anybody seriously considers visiting Mtae, I am happy to pass on Joseph's number, who will be back in the area in October 2008 (I was just informed, that he has been sponsored by a church in Germany to visit them for one year).
