Mt Manaia Walkway Whangarei Reviews
Test Your Fitness for Spectacular Views Sep 16, 2013
The 460 meter high Mount Manaia can be viewed anywhere from Whangerai harbour down to Bream Bay. It certainly dominates the skyline and looks so majestic and beautiful from every angle.
Maori legends tells that each of the five obvious rock formations at the summit of the mountain represent a person. Chief Manaia being one of them, his 2 children and his wife Pito who he sneakily stole from the chief Hautau. Hautau is said to be in persuit brandishing his weapon in an attempt to strike the unfaithful wife down. The characters were then all turned to stone by the God of Thunder.
The climb is a difficult 1050 step, 1 and a half hour return trip. It takes a certain level of fitness, or in my case, steely determination even though my lungs were ready to collapse and my heart set to beat out of my ears. The weather in New Zealand is suitable for a climb such as this because its nice weather - not too hot, not too cold. Although it certainly is chilly at the summit so ensure to bring extra layers.
The track on the way up is densely covered by shrubs and foliage so it is not an option to climb half-way, take a photo from a mid-way viewpoint and then give up... You must keep going to to top. It is worth it in the end. Thepanoramic view of Bream Bay, The Oil Refinery and Whangarei Harbour are spectacularly breathtaking.
