Mt Davidson is a free hiking area close to Twin peaks in the city. There's actually a huge cross memorial on the top of the park area, wihch is surprisingly hidden throughout despite its size. I'd never noticed it before while driving around the city, but now it will always stand out.The cross is a memorial meant to honor the slaughter of Armenian citizens by the Turkish during WWI. Over 1.5 million Armenians were killed, which represented over half of the Armenian population at the time. There were no historical towns in Western Armenia by the end of the war. Because San Francisco has a large Armenian population, FDR built the memorial here in the city. The hill that the cross is on has a great view of the city as well. It gives a different view of downtown than one is used to, as you're looking east onto the financial district. Also, one can clearly see the Twin Peaks TV tower, as well as surrounding areas of Bay Point and Daly City.
