Mürren-Schilthorn Wanderweg mountain trail Jun 20, 2012
the mürren-schilthorn mountain trail is one of the toughest high altitude mountain trails but the most breathtaking and stunning of all (along with sefinenfurgge) that doesnt require technical skills (snow and ice climbing) in interlaken (berner oberland).

with T3 class as hiking grade (challenging mountain hike) you will encounter along the trail - avalanche (early summer), falling rocks and debris, crags, sharp stones, very steep slope traverse and you need a basic alpine experience and rock/snow scrambling.

you can either ascend or descend by cable car whenever you like it. starting from the town of mürren at 1,650 m (5,413 ft) up until the mountain peak of the schilthorn 2,970 m (9,744 ft) with a trail (ascent/descent)distance of around 12-13 kms (one way).

the view here is unrivaled and spectacular than any other mountain trails in the berner oberland - you will follow the formidable northwall of the bernese alps rising majestically 3 kilometers from the valley floor with the glaciated peaks of the breithorn, tschingelhorn, blüemlisalp massif, gspaltenhorn, äbeni flueh etc. rising to more than 3400 meters high and the culminating peak of the northwall - the jungfrau at 4,166 m (13,669 ft). it is also the least explored trail, so this route is not as busy as the other routes and you can have the nature all to yourself to reflect.

you will also pass on the trail which is a high alpine tundra, the highest lake in the bernese alps - the grauseeli at 2500 meters that mirrors the mountains on a clear and unfrozen day. then once you entered the low altitude and treeline - you would pass a beautiful forest with lots of waterfalls and a fast flowing river right after the town of mürren.

be wary of the weather! eventhough it was sunny when we started - halfway, the mist covered the valley that made the orientation a little bit difficult and it can rain anytime (or snow).

what you need here are:

- no red tapes.

- sturdy shoes (i recommend snow boots or very good trekking shoes). no trainers or rubber shoes - the trail which is covered with sharp rocks are unbearable - i could feel the sharp stones in the soles of my feet.

- trekking poles as the trail is too steep.

- windbreakers.

- sun cream /sun glasses / hat

- enery bars, cheese, sugar, cola, water for energy hiking and traversing the steep slope.

- camera for taking the marvelous and spectacular landscape.

the mürren-schilthorn mountain trail can be reached from interlaken ost via lauterbrunnen to stechelberg - very expensive plus the cable car whether your ascending or descending (not roundtrip) that will cost around 60chf.

all in all i recommend this mountain trail for its breathtaking and challenging terrain! but this is not for first timers as you need an excellent sense most specially if the trail is covered in snow.
