Mr. Charles Hostel Mar 19, 2017
Mr. Charles is spreading around… I heard that originally he had a Hotel (that is still there but larger and nicer) and then he opened this Hostel in the same yard. Then his wife opened couple places and the EMPIRE is born. This family is definitely well organized and has great experience in making your stay comfortable and interesting.

Aside of good hospitality service, they are also prized for their guided tours. Hsipaw area is famous for picturesque villages and unique way of life that did not change much with modern age. Mr. Charles trackers organize lots of different level and length tracks that leave every day. Every morning more than dozen young local boys introduce newly arrived foreigners to what is to be expected and where they are going. Tours are very cheap and you will be fed in the villages that you are visiting and if your tour is longer, you’ll also sleep like locals do.

Most of the people come to this town by train. It is not the last station, but lots of foreigners disembark and hostel reception is really busy at that time. Surprisingly enough they work pretty well and people are sent to their rooms fast and without much bureaucracy.

I was in the four bed dorm with the AC (AC was not needed in any way). Bathrooms and showers are on the same floor and they are very modern and well maintained. YES, there is a hot water at all the times, which is very important after the long days of walking the hills. Downstairs in the yard, there are more bathrooms and showers if you need them. Most of the rooms are on the second floor and before going upstairs you are requested to leave your shoes.

Second floor also features large balcony with bunch of chairs. It is really a great place to relax and enjoy the morning or evening (during the day it was way too hot). Internet is not good at all and you can maybe catch few minutes here and there (but you came here for nature, and nature it is ).

Breakfast is included in the price and it is very good one. Few ladies are constantly tending to few hot stations that are filled with pancakes, eggs, rice and you can also get some fruit, sweet spreads and bread. Coffee is good and plentiful.

Hostel is only half block from the main street and you can easily go to the market, river and temples or find the restaurant that suits your needs. Train station is some 500m away and buses stop on the main road. River restaurants are especially nice because of the view and cold beer (not necessarily in that order)

When you go to tracking, you can leave your bag with Mr. Charles. They also have smaller lockers where you can lock your valuables. Security is 24/7 so your stuff is fine.

Generally it is relaxed and good place to stay, great to meet people and roam that back country.
