Mr. Bartley's Gourmet Burgers Cambridge Reviews
Amazing burgers!!!!!! Aug 31, 2009
Okay, as you might know two of my vices when I travel are burgers and BBQ. For being an Asian, its weird how much I like them both. Well after being a little disappointed by Eagle's Deli, Maureen brought me to Bartley's. No, I did not visit both in the same day.
To say this place was packed is an understatement. There was a line out the door. The tiny (and I mean tiny) tables outside were packed. And the inside was elbow to elbow it looked like. But as small as this place is, they do a pretty good job of getting the food out to you. While you're waiting outside, they will actually come out and take your order so by the time you're seated, your food will arrive.
And there's a reason this place is crowded. Its been around since 1960, so I guess they know what they are doing. The burgers are amazing. The patties themselves aren't even that big, just 7 oz of beef. But you can tell they are hand formed and not frozen. As soon as you bite into it, you'll know what I mean. There are over 15 types (which include fries) to choose from and all of them are under $10. They also have sandwiches, appetizers and salads. But everyone I saw was eating a burger, so thats what I got. I even got an order of onion rings to share with Maureen. And the frappes (shakes) looked so good, I order two of them that I didn't even share with Maureen :-)
Maureen got the "Yuppie" burger which came with boursin cheese and bacon. I've never tried boursin cheese before, but it was pretty good. And the bacon added a nice flavor to it. Me, I got the "Viagra" burger. Yes, I know its a horribe name for a burger. But its basicly a bacon and blue cheese burger. And I topped it off with grilled onions, so it was pretty damn beautiful burger. I got it cooked medium and the burger came out perfect. There aren't too many places that can cook a burger well around my parts. Down here you usually get well done no matter how you ordered the thing cooked.
It was a pretty fun place to eat. We sat at the outside tables, since it was a little cooler night. This place fills every seat. If there is an empty seat, they will put someone in it. Our four top was shared with two other grad students from Harvard. They were talking politics. And surprisingly, they knew what they were talking about. Maureen kicked me under the table as I just smiled to myself. She knows I can't stand it when people talk politics and DON'T know what they are talking about :-)
So we just sat outside, finished our burgers, and snacked on our onion rings and people watched. This area is awesome. If I had a job offer, I would move here in a heartbeat. And yes, I eventually gave Maureen one of the frappes, after she kept staring at it and then at me.
