Mountain Titlis Bern Reviews
Great experience, but expensive Apr 30, 2012
Titlis is the name of the biggest Mountain in this area with an altitude of 10000ft / 3000m. Its located in a beautiful little town called Engelberg.
== How to get there ==
From Zürich its just a 1 1/2 hour trip by car. You can also look for trains going there. Theres a detailed explanation on the website http://www.titlis.ch/index.php?id=2
== How to get up in the Mountains ==
You actually cannot miss the cable car cause you can see it from everywhere while being in Engelberg. It takes three different Cablecar rides to get up to the very top of Mt. Titlis. You can decide whether to go to the very top or only to one of the previous stops, which is a little cheaper (but you should buy the more expensive ticket, the view is worth it).
== The Cablecars ==
The gondolas of the first Cablecar are small, I guess a max. of four person have space in it. The trip takes quite a while and provides some amazing views over Engelberg and the Mountainrange. Plus theres a little window that you can open - so perfect for taking some photos.
The second Cablecar is a huge one with many people in it. You will rarely have space to take photos or have great views, unless you are fast and can stand at a window.
The third one is similar to the second one, with the difference that it rotates. Problem is the same here, pretty crowded!
== At the Top ==
When you finally arrive at the top, you will have to walk some stairs to get outside. From there you will have an amazing view over the alps. This surely depends on the weather, so you should really only go there on clear and good weather.
You can also climb some snow-hills, which is especially fun for the kids.
Theres also an Ice Cave including some ice sculptures, quite nice but nothing too special.
The restaurant provides great views aswell, you should have a Rösti with Cheese and Ham there, it tastes pretty good.
== Attention ==
It can be extremly windy and cold up there, you should wear appropriate clothes! I have seen some asian tourists and some of the girls where in mini-skirts, which might be kinda cold at -5°C ;-) I have been there in May, so Engelberg (which is on ab altitude of 1000m) had around 24°C, and Mt. Titlis (3000m) was at -5°C - so remember to bring some winter-clothes :)
== Prices ==
Thats the minor negative here - Switzerland in general is just unbelievably expensive. The roundtrip-ticket is at 60€, when you arrive after 12pm its at 50€. But you should not forget that its a skiing-area, so these prices also count if you want to go skiing - I think its okay for that. Kids under 6 go for free.
The restaurant and gift-shops are also expensive. We were 4 persons, including one little child and payed more than 100€ only for our lunch in the restaurant. So a Family-Trip can become quite expensive here!
But definitely a recommendation from my side!
