Tangkuban Perahu is a volcano outside of Bandung Indonesia (around 20km). Its elevation is just under 7,000 feet and local Sundanese call it the "upturned boat" from the legend of Dayang Sumbi. Its last known eruption was in 1983, although when you visit here you can see steam rising from the hot water springs in the crater bottom. We rented a car and driver and left early in the morning; this is the best time to go because it started getting crowded with bus loads of tourists by the time we were about to leave the crater. The drive from Bandung took about an hour and is mostly an ascent up the mountain. The countryside reminded me a lot of Rwanda as we made the drive, with pointed hills, terraced crops of tea, and even some banana trees.
We paid 70,000 Indonesian Rupiah (about 8USD) to get into the park, but most of that was for me because it is cheaper for Indonesian residents. There is a trail around more than half of the rim of the crater for viewing but you are not allowed to go down into the crater. Along part of the trail are several little shops and places to eat and drink. You can also have eggs that they cook on the various hot surfaces of the ground where the hot water springs are. If you're up for a horse ride, they also have locals who sell rides on the ponies. Bandung, itself, is cooler than in Jakarta but up here on the crater mountain the temperatures are even cooler. I wore just shorts and a t-shirt, but you might be more comfortable by bringing a sweater along.
We didn't take the trail completely to the end, but expect to be here at least two or three hours if you walk all of it...and even more if you're stopping to take pictures as frequently as we did. Tangkuban Perahu is definitely worth a visit if you're around Bandung, or even in Jakarta and you have the extra time. It takes about three hours (with traffic) to get to Bandung from Jakarta.
