Mount Ruapehu Vacation Guide
Mt Ruapehu is the highest of the three mountains making up the central plateau of New Zealand's North Island. The other two being Mounts Ngarahoe and Tongariro.
Ruapehu was the basis for Mt Doom of Lord of the Rings fame but most know it for it's great skiing.
Access to the mountain is from two sides. State Highway 47 takes you down through National Park, where you can get up to the Chateau or State Highway 1 takes you past the Eastern side of the mountains along the Desert Road.
In recent years Mt Ruapehu has been giving everyone a few thrills along the lines of eruptions and lahars but the ski fields have only been closed a couple of times due to the dangers posed.
This is a fun mountain for all levels of snow enthusiasts and the season typically runs from July through to November although there has been skiing at Christmas some years too.
