High on the Atlantic Coast Feb 08, 2008
At 1,385 feet, Mount Megunticook is the highest mainland mountain on the Atlantic coast and fairly easy to conquer. The trail to the top is roughly one mile and moderately difficult. Be forewarned the trail is littered with roots and rocks, but careful foot placement is the only prerequisite to enjoying some incredible views.

You pick up the trailhead from the lot near the park entrance (continue on towards the parking area directly behind the gate). The ascent is fairly steep the entire way as your elevation gain will be about thirteen hundred feet in the mile or so to the top of the Atlantic coast. I’ve hiked this trail n every season and it always seems to be wet and muddy for several stretches, another reason to heed your footing. The mud is easy to forget as you enjoy the pleasant mix of evergreens and deciduous trees and keep your eyes open for the broad range of birds that pass through the park.

About 3/4ths of the way up you will come upon Ocean Overlook, providing the most stunning vistas in the park. There are plenty of ledges where you can sit for a picnic lunch and take in the breath taking views of Penobscot Bay, Camden Harbor (a bit distant but still visible) and neighboring mountains.

Even though the peak of Megunticook is higher, the views are not so good as Ocean Overlook, but you are now well placed for further adventures in the park. Few folks venture past Megunticook and Battie, but Camden Hills includes thirty miles of trails and if you proceed West from Megunticook’s peak you can steer towards the majestic Maiden Cliffs or many other great trails. Otherwise, you can backtrack down to Ocean Overlook to plug into the Tablelands trails to Mount Battie (and stop at Adam’s Lookout, another great viewpoint, along the way).
