Mount Maunganui Beachside Holiday Park Reviews
New Zealand's Premium Camping Ground Jun 26, 2012
Located on the east coast of New Zealand and only 2 - 3 hours drive south of Auckland, this camping ground lies at the very foot of Mount Maunganui (Mauao).
There are a few options when staying there including cabins, caravan, motor-home and tent sites. The first thing I'd recommend doing before anything else is booking well in advance. This is a holiday hot spot in New Zealand and because of it's limited size this camping ground fills very fast, especially in the summer months.
Apart from all of the usual features a New Zealand camping ground consists of (like communal kitchens, shower/toilet blocks, laundry and waste management stations) this park has free wifi, TV rooms and 3 tiers (terraced) of sites to choose from (with those sites at the waters edge costing that little bit more, but all with a good view of the surroundings) when staying.
Without a doubt the best feature of this camping ground is it's location. The beautiful white sand beaches of Mt Maunganui. It's central to almost everything you could need or want to do and the natural surroundings are something to behold.
If you like water sports its all there, diving, snorkeling, spearfishing, sailing, fishing (rock or charter boat), para-sailing, jet-skiing, water-skiing, swimming (in the sea or the hot pools located at the parks entrance).
There's also the 45min walk around the base of the mountain or for those of you who are a little fitter the hike to the summit (which offers spectacular 360 degree views of the Western Bay of Plenty).
It's also very handy to the shops, cafes and restaurants located straight across the road and only a 10 minute walk from the CBD where your find many more retail delights. You can walk down the beach to and up the track to the top of Leisure Island where you'll encounter the blow hole and more spectacular views.
Another good thing about this parks location is that it's directly behind the Surf Lifesaving Club, so whether your lying on the sand enjoying the sun or frolicking in the surf like "Free Willy" you'll always have the eager eyes of the lifeguards watching your back, keeping you and your family safe (provided your swimming between the flags of course).
The best time to be there is during the festive season when Mt Maunganui turns from a near wintry ghost town into a thriving mass of holiday makers and tourists. With highlights being the New Years Eve celebrations and free entertainment/activities for adults and children alike.
I haven't been to many places in the world but Mt Maunganui is definitely my favourite summer destination and the Mount Maunganui Beach-side Holiday Park is blessed to be in such a position.
