Mount Huangshan Reviews
An under-rated sight: Mount Huangshan Jun 17, 2011
Ever wondererd what inspired the "floating mountains" in the movie "Avatar" ?
Well, its a rather under-rated mountain destination in China: Mount Huangshan
Directions: 5 hours drive from Shanghai (can be done on public transport) will take you to a town called Tunxi near the mountain. Add another 1 hour of bus ride and you are at the base/entry gate of the mountain. Either trek up from here (about 4 hours), or take a cable car (30 mins) and you will reach the top.
What to see: Its a huge mountain with multiple peaks at the top. In order to see a decent size of the place you would need to trek about 5-6 hours around the peak. Jade peak in particular is a rather strenous climb on the trek.
There are well built and maintained trek around the mountain so its a bit of a put off for serious trekkers who like to rough it up. On the other hand its good news for newbies or for people with average interest in hardcore trekking.
Be prepared for herds of chinese tourists around the length of this trek as well as on the cable car. Thats rather normal in China, at all tourist destinations.
The scenery is spectacular, at some places absolutely stunning. I wonder why nobody has written a travel review about it here.
Safe travels and Cheers !!!
