My friends from Oregon and the northern part of Northern California always make fun of this mountain and call it a "hill". But at 3,849 feet, it's officially a mountain and it's near and dear to the hearts of people who grew up in the East Bay. You can access Mt. Diablo from both Walnut Creek and Danville, but I think most people enter the state park on the Danville side.

Many people head straight up to the observation deck at the summit for great views. They say the views are best on clear day after a rainstorm. I think it's best to go in the springtime when the air is clearer, the grass is green and the flowers are in bloom. In the winter it sometimes snows at the top of the mountain. Because the hills around Mt. Diablo are low, on a clear day you can see the Golden Gate Bridge, the Santa Cruz Mountains and even the Sierra Nevada Mountains. They claim that it offers the second best views in the world after Mount Kilimanjaro.

You can also go camping on the mountain. You can also bring some food and have a picnic. There are a variety of hiking and rock climbing options and caves and other things to explore. At the summit there is a museum open most days of the week with a little bit of history and information about Mt. Diablo and the surrounding areas.

I remember hiking Mt. Diablo when I was a kid -- we accessed it from Clayton -- lots of little waterfalls in the spring!
