Mount Carmel Massacre Site
Mount Carmel Massacre Site Waco Reviews
Worth a detour Mar 27, 2013
Most people above 30 have heard about the massacre at the Mount Carmel prayer center where the members of the Davidian cult used to meet.
The story is simple, yet still controversial: after a raid made by the FBI and ATF in which several ATF officers were killed, the site was sieged for 51 days until the whole place caught fire and all the members of the cult were killed, either by the flames or smoke.
The responsability for the fire is still a mystery: the government said it was a mass suicide, yet other versions blame the FBI with starting the fire that ended it all.
Whether you choose to believe the official or the alternative version, this place near Waco, TX is worth a visit. There are no signs of the complex left, the only thing remaining is the swimming pool that was used as a bunker against the FBI. There are a couple of memorials with the names of the victims including the notorious David Koresh.
But somehow being there gives you an eerie feeling when acknowledging that many people lost their lives in a violent way in that ground, that looks so quiet and peaceful now.
