Mount Aso Reviews
Walking around active volcanos Jul 23, 2000
Mount Aso is a national park and houses several active volcanos. It measures 24 kilometers (15 miles) in length and 19 kilometers (12 miles) in width.
I visited the park back in 2000 and the charges were included in my tour. Access to the park is basically free, but depending on the form of transportation you're taking, there are costs.
Taking the one way bus from Aso Train Station costs 540 yen (around 5 euro or around 6,50 US dollars) - not covered by your Japan Rail Pass!. Driving up to the park means going on a toll road the last few kilometers and that will cost you 560 yen (around 5,50 euro or around 7 US dollars).
If you don't like the 30 minute walk to the crater, you can take a round trip with a ropeway ride. This will cost you 1000 yen (around 10 euro or around 12 US dollars).
I suggest to take the walk up there, not only save money but also to enjoy the views of the surrounding area. The climb is okay to do, not that steap.
As for temperature on the top. I was there in mid july, so the sun was shining and it was nice & warm up there. But in the cooler months, I suggest to dress warmer or bring a sweater or jakcet with you.
Part of the list What to see and do in Japan
