Nightime Volcano Trek May 19, 2011
This is another world from the Bali beaches. Starting by being woken at 0130 is always interesting, and on our way in the taxi from Sidemen it was amazing how much street life there was in even the smallest village at 0230! We arrived in the moonlight at a temple on the S. Side of Mt Agung and waited while the guide said a prayer for the success of our trip. Then without more ado we strode past the temple at 3am and by the light of one good and one fading torch, plunged in to the undergrowth and headed up. And up, and up....It was cool but the exertion rapidly heated us up.. In the dark difficult to think about anything except footing, the next step, and was it really 0330. The gradient was significant and we needed the guide to stop every quarter hour to catch our breath. Harder to catch as we went up every 500m. Need to be quite fit as it just keeps coming, with trenches, roots, rocks, branches all lying in wait in the dark. Impossible without a guide. Trees clear as you get higher you see the lights of Ubud and Denpasar, and then you hear the first birds. then a glimmer of light creeping from the East. Magic in the air. As Mt Agung dominates the Island and the climate, you can see it all laid out below you to the East, South and West as you go higher.Dawn is pretty neat, and that time the volcano cast a weird flat shadow across the sky. Guide said he had never seen before in 100 climbs so we were lucky. Also air clear which it seems is unusual. dread to think what rain would have done- not possible probably. By now 6-6.30 and you just sit there and wonder. I let my son go on towards the top- we were 20mins away and I needed to rest before going down.

On the way down the dew is settling and it gets more and more slippery- volcanic mud, lichen, wet rocks, tree roots- endless tigger traps. Only fell twice and my son 3 times so I won that one. It was surprisingly tricky coming down, and I suspect I might have baulked on the way up if I had understood it was 6hours walking solid plus rests.

Still great feeling of doing what few others do. Maybe 8 cars in the car park and no more than 30 people on the whole volcano in perfect conditions for the climb. Great temple at the bottom, but we tucked in to peanuts and Pocari sweat. Do the temple another time..
Journeys end- 0930 after 6-7 hours…
Weird shadow from sunrise on Mt Ag…
Temple at the South of Mt Agung
