One of the best ways to explore Koh Lanta is to rent a motorbike from your hotel, travel center, etc.
The first part of this tip is dealing with petrol. It's significantly cheaper to purchase from a gas station versus the side of the road. For example, 2 liters was about 20 baht less and a half a tank more. In other words, 2 liters only filled up my bike to a half of tank when I purchased from the side of the road. Whereas, 2 liters purchased from the gas station completely filled my tank.
There are 2 main gas stations in the area between Saladan Town and Klong Dao Beach on the northwestern side of the island. There are other smaller ones scattered throughout the island, but they seemed to be closed most of the time.
The other tip is to check out the beaches on the southwestern side of the island. These beaches are basically isolated which can create that feeling of having a beach all to yourself. The water is also quite pristine and aside from some rocks, pretty good for swimming.
