Mostar Vacation Guide
Mostar derives its name from the bridge keepers (mostari) that watched over its historic bridge (in native language, the word "most" means "bridge"). Tragically, the bridge was destroyed by the Croatian Army (HVO) in June of 1992. However, Croatia donated money to a monumental project to rebuild the bridge after the war. Even though "stari most" stands again, the city remains divided along ethnic lines. Scanning the skyline, one quickly recognizes the competition between the rising minarets on one side of the river and the grandiose Catholic Church bell tower on the other side.
For the tourist, the city is safe and easily accessible. If arriving by bus, do not be alarmed by the hoard of older women hawking rooms as you exit. In fact, if you speak a bit of the language you can often negotiate a lower price for accommodations. On a lighter side, Mostar became the first city (in 2005) to build a bronze Bruce Lee statue which is situated in Mostar's central park (unfortunately the statue was vandalized shortly after its unveiling).
