Mostar is a town about 4 hours by bus from Split and was our first stop in Bosnia and Hercigovina. Mostar is famous for its old bridge that was destroyed during the war with Croatia in the 1990s. The bridge has since been rebuilt and is now a symbol of the rebuilding process post war, not only of Bosnia, but also of the relations with the Croatians. Driving into the town the devastation caused by the war is still clearly visible. The rebuilding of the town has been significant as alm...

Mostar by the river Neretva is over 500 years old. Parts of the town has been rebuild after the war 1991 - 95. Wherever you go in Mostar you can see scars after this war, but the town is rising form the ruins. Stari Most - The Old Bridge (build in 1566), is rebuild, the old stones are brought up from Neretva and jused. Summer 2004 the bridge was reopened. The old city was in 2005 placed on UNESCO`s trust.

It is estimated that over 100,00 people were killed in the Bosnian War that took place between 1992 and 1995. Of all the conflicts that occurred during the breakup of Yugoslavia, this was the bloodiest and deadliest. Most of the casualties were experienced on the Bosnian side, and many of the towns and villages in this region were completely devastated. It was a terrible time for these people, to put it mildly. Steve and I drove to Bosnia and Herzegovina today to visit the town of Mostar. Mos...

I finally made it to Mostar! I was sooo excited. I was born in Bosnia and I've never seen the old bridge. I never realized how sad it was until I met all these people who weren't from Bosnia and they saw it! So I decided that this summer I have to go, I just had to. And I did and it was beautiful. My only problem was that it was too hot. You see...I went to Mostar on my way from Dubrovnik and it was really cold on the bus because of the ac so I wore jeans. I was in Mostar from 11 am till abou...

I spent 8 months in Bosnia on a research fellowship for graduate school. It was a great experience and I got to travel around the region quite a bit. I'd highly recommend the Balkans if you are looking for adventure, hospitality, great food. It is also gentle on your wallet. Enjoy the photos.

After leaving Croatia I made a split decision to head to Slovenia via a detour through Bosnia. Unfortunately it was Rammadan and this muslim country had basically shut up shop. There wasn't a lot to do and I had to stay in an old ladies basement... Nevertheless it was an experience.
