Located in an area of Cairo where few tourists venture, this mosque is one of the oldest in the Arab world. Sandwiched in the heart of Islamic Cairo under the imposing Mohamed Ali mosque this really is a place where history comes alive and you can catch a true glimpse of life here centuries ago in the Arab golden age. Study the intricate art and patterns chiseled in stone, then climb the ancient minaret and be overwhelmed by the view of hundreds of mosques and medieval dwellings. This is a place I come back to everytime I come to Cairo. A must for everybody!

My friends and I also visited a few interesting mosques. Members of modern Egypt's royal family, including Ismail and King Farouk, are buried inside Ar-Rifai. Also, the last Shan of Iran is buried there. Ibn Tulun was another interesting mosque. It is Iraqi in style and it is the first… Islamic Cairo: Oops! I don't think I was supposed to see that head. . .or take a picture of it! |
