Moscow Overview

Moscow is a steadily growing town of about 25,000 (up 16% since 2000) located at the intersection of U.S. Highway 95 and Idaho Highway 8 in Latah County in Northern Idaho near the border with Washington. Moscow was settled in 1871 and had an abundance of camas bulbs favored as fodder for pigs; so the area was named "Hog Heaven". When the post office was established the following year the name was changed to "Paradise Valley" then, in 1875, to Moscow. The origin of the name is much disputed and several stories about the origin of the name exist. Moscow is home to the University of Idaho and many special events relating to the town and the college occur all year. Moscow is the county seat of Latah County, which was formed in 1888. The name of Latah County is from a Nez Perce word for ""the place of pine trees and pestle".

Moscow has a large historic district with a number of buildings of historical and/or architectural interest. There are two historic districts and 21 individual locations in Moscow listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Moscow also has a few nice museums like the: McConnell Mansion, the American Legion Cabin, and the Appaloosa Museum.
