Yesterday, September 7th, 2008, Moscow celebrated its 861st Birthday with a multiple live music performance on the streets of central Moscow and a big fireworks display above Red Square, St. Basil's and the Kremlin.  I didn't make it to any of the concerts this year, as I was at Borodino, (blog to come) but I did catch the fireworks display from my window and here are some of the pictures.  This isn't the first time I've taken pictures of fireworks from my apartment window...but it'…

Today we were completely 'guideless'. We took the subway to the Red Square to visit the mausoleum of Lenin. We were lucky; today was a very quiet day and no queues, so it was literally in and out in five minutes. The sight of the world's (second?)most famous mummy is surreal. Because the mummification technique uses wax, the corpse looks more like a Madame Tussaud's statue than a real person. In fact, it would not surprise me if it is a statue, and the real Lenin has been buried alongside his…

I  love windows. I mean those holes in the wall that enable us to stay always connected with the outer world. Window is one of the most impirtant things in any room, and the view is absolutely crucial.   On a sunny October day I was at home happily listening to Chico Buarque and enjoying the blue sky and the last golden leaves on the trees below my window…and it occurred to me to take some pics of the view from my window and share it with you, my TBs. Well, I can’t brag of ha…

I had a down day and was slowly making my way home with my hands full of yoghurt, milk and some other regular food from my local supermarket. Why not to check my mail? • thought I (yeah, mail, not emailJ) ...and......yoooooooooooo!!! a piece of cartoon at the bottom of my mailbox. A postcard featuring the Kremlin...interesting...I turned it over.....OMG!!!!! Of course, it is from Anita (Dbdsangel), my dear amiga aka Bonita!!! What a great day! I went to Moscow, again... I guess this was the last time for some uncertain period. I am a bit tired and confused. I had great time, though I can't say I made it to MAKS, the aviation exhibition. The story is complicated. And it was terribly hot, so we spent a lot of time in Evropeiskij - the shopping center, as this was the place with air conditioning. So no story here, just some random pictures.

i travel to moscow all my life, since i can remember myself - cause i was born there and my father lived there. usually i go there by train. and actually, trains havent changed much - they are the same as in my early childhood. only the upholstery is new and  also now they serve tea and coffee in dsiposable cups instead of cool soviet glasses with glass holders. :)i prefer traveling to moscow by train - cause its more romantic or well... at least more old fashioned than going by plane. :)…

The 19 year old German pilot landed his Cessna on the bridge right in front of our hotel window back in 1987. He then taxied to Red Square. He so embarrassed the Russian military that more than 2000 officers lost their jobs, including the defense and air defense ministers, who were opposed to Gorbachev's glasnost and perestroika, so Gorbachev took this opportunity to fire them. The pilot Mathias Rust was prompted arrested and was enprisoned for more than 400 days before being released and sen…

It's good to see Rick again and I've been anxious to pick up the things I left with him while I toured Europe and the Middle East.  He looks more pale with new worry lines on his face these days though.  Apparently has some trouble with his import business and he may have gotten involved with the wrong people unwittingly.  I find out years later that later that winter he's nearly blown apart in a failed car bombing and ends up spiriting his wive and daughter away to Canada and&…

The flight from Berlin to Moscow Vnukovo was pretty normal and I slept most of it anyway.  It took a while to get through passport control at the Moscow airport though it was pretty cool to see the page numbers and harps go psychedelic under the ultraviolet light.  I took my time getting out of the airport.  It was only 1500 and I was happier looking around and finding the right way to go rather than heading off into the blue yonder.  Managed to pick up some money from an …

Due to the lack of food and excessive alcomahol the night before I was well hung over when I woke up for my last day in Moscow. Somehow I had to make it to the Tretyakov Gallery for my last stint of sightseeing in Moscow. It was a struggle of epic proportions to get out of bed and out the door. But being the soldier I was, I battled on and made it there. Enjoying some of the best Russian art for close to 1.5 hours. We then caught a transfer to the station to catch the 14:40 train to Irkutsk. …

A short metro ride from the center of Moscow and seemingly a world away from the craziness of the cities 13 million people is Tsaritsnyo Reserve and Museum.  Tsaritsnyo Reserve is a massive expanse of woodlands, rolling fields and 18th century buildings.    On a warm summer day Tsaritsnyo Reserve is filled with Russians fleeing Moscow for country air, scenic ponds and wooded walks.  The natural beauty of Tsaritsnyo is only half the pleasure of the park, howeve…
