Illinois does have more to offer than Chicago.
Starved Rock State Park on the Illinois River is fun to hike through, Allerton Park in Monticello, IL is beautiful to see any time of year, anywhere up and down the Mississippi River is fun to see also. Also, don't forget Metropolis, IL home of the Superman statue!
Definately make the time and effort when you get the chance.
