Moravský Caverns: How the heck did I end up here? Apr 05, 2009
Morvasky caverns can be reached by taking a very short bus ride from Brno. Once you arrive, you buy your tickets at the front office and take a trolley driven by a tractor to the caverns themselves. We had some time to kill once we got there, so I got some hot wine which prolonged my looming hangover from coming yet even more. Man that was some good hot wine. The giftshop was amazing here. You can buy this stuff called moldavite which looks normal until you hold it up to the light and it glows green. The Czech say that it came from a meteorite, but who knows. You can actually buy stalactites here too(wont find that in Carlsbad Caverns). Anyways, on to the caves. The caverns are pretty remarkable. Lots of really big formations and well lit throughout. Every once in a while an english narrator comes through the speakerphone system to tell you a little about the caves. It was hard to understand her though as it echoed when she spoke (that or my hangover was near =-)The cave opened up in to what I think was called Semotep(?) Hundreds of years back, a woman got tired of taking care of her stepchildren. One day, she became so upset with them she threw her stepchildren from the top of this gorge. Ever since then, the Czech will say they have a Semotep(?) if they have a stepmother they cant stand. Anyways, it was a very wide opening through the top and the icy river running at the bottom. After walking around the caves on foot, you can take a boat ride through the caverns. I dunno if its just me, but it reminds me of a Czech pirates of the caribbean ride. Its pretty cool though. You dock inside the caves and walk around for a bit more than boat back. My tour guide said that there are fish that bite in this river so dont stick your fingers in. Who knows if he was messing with me or not, but better to be safe than sorry I suppose. If you visit the caves in the spring, the water will be very high and the boat tour will be much shorter since the caves are flooded. Also, make sure you wear WARM clothing during winter and spring.
