Moraine Lake, and Valley of The Ten Peaks Jul 02, 2011
Moraine Lake is nestled in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, only a few kilometers from the world Famous Lake Louise Village.

This is one of the most spectacular spots in the Canadian Rockies (aren't they all though?) and you are sure to be blessed with a wonderful sight and a sure sense of mountain serenity and awe. Amid the sheer rising mountains and rocky cliffs, lies the stunning blue Moraine Lake.

Around Moraine Lake there are many hiking trails, and those trails are attainable by average hikers. Canoe rentals are available throughout the day, and there is a gift shop and chalet nearby.

I highly recommened doing the Valley of The Ten Peaks trail. This trail hike is definately one to remember, as you will not get a better view of the ten peaks any where else. Each peak rises a stunning 10,000 feet high. Most of these peaks are partially covered with snow patches and glacial freeze which in the summer months can sound like thunder when pieces melt off and crash down the side of the mountains!

Along the hike don't be suprised to see marmots sunbathing in rock patches. Also you most likely will hear the whistle of the tiny mouse like pika's in the distance.

A few things you might need to know before heading on the hike:

-groups of 4 may be needed to get on the trail

-10 km return trip

-bring your camera and sense of adventure!

Overall Moraine Lake is beautiful place to be even if you don't go on any hikes.

I totally agree. Moraine Lake is surely one of the most beautiful places on the planet. I can't wait to be there next. Hopefully later this month! :)

Moraine Lake Jul 10, 2008
The Canadian Rockies are well known for breathtaking sceneries. Among my personal favorites is Moraine Lake. This gem is located about 30 miles northwest of Banff in the Banff National Park. Or 10 miles south of Lake Louise. Just follow the sights from the Transcanada Highway.

Best time to go there in my opinion is the early morning - for several reasons. First there won't be many tourists around. The whole place is wonderfully quiet then. Second you can watch the sun slowly rising and flooding the valley and sea with light. And, I can tell you, the color of the lake is simply unbelievable! Of course it is best on sunny days. But even when it is cloudy the lake is "glowing" turquoise and blue-green. Third reason is that later in the day canoes appear on the water. Perhaps an option for you!

Please note: There are also some interesting hikes in the Moraine lake area which are sometimes restricted due to Grizzly bear activity!
