Bucking the Trend Jul 02, 2011
The Moosewood started bucking trends early on, opening in 1973 as a natural foods restaurant. Since that time their delicious creations (both in the restaurant and in their popular cookbooks) have gained acclaim as a leader in vegetarian dining. The restaurant is a very hip and modern establishment, inviting from the moment you step inside. Even though they were very busy on a Saturday evening, the number of tables limited my wait to about thirty minutes. Good thing it was summer, when their capacity expands with plentiful outdoor seating. I was told it would be a longer wait to go al fresco and so I just asked for first available, winding up indoors as you might have guessed.

My meal was a celebration after having completed an ultra marathon earlier in the day, so I chose a pair of daily specials: a cup of Welsh Rarebit soup and Mushroom Paprikash for an entrée. Seeing the paprikash made my mouth water, because my wife makes a mean version, and so I called her after placing the order. I had to chuckle when she shared that the recipe she has been using all these years came from a Moosewood cookbook! So this may be the first and last time I have ever humbled myself to take a picture of my meal, just to share with Kim. Needless to say, I enjoyed a tasty meal backed with just the right amount of attention from wait staff.

A great meal, great service and wonderful ambiance translates into many stars for the Moosewood. Even the waiting area has comfortable seating and a small gift shop where you can pore over cookbooks or branded clothing until your table opens up. There is also a bar section, which was lively, and I can only pass along a sincere recommendation to drop in for dinner.

And don't forget the menus change with EVERY MEAL (not just daily...BOTH lunch and dinner turn over).

It's been a good 30+ years since I've been to Ithaca, but it seemed an eclectic place back then. This place has some dishes out of the ordinary in keeping with my memory. Good review and it always nice to see something different on the review menus - Bravo!
