Moorish Castle (Castle of the Moors)
Moorish Castle (Castle of the Moors) Reviews
Moorish Castle still stunning after all these centuries Jan 31, 2009
Perched on a high ridge in Sintra are the remains of a magnificent Moorish Castle. Originally built by the Moors in the 9th or 10th century, the ruins that exist today were heavily renovated in the 19th century. Despite all the changes, the remaining stone towers and walkways are overwhelming even in their faded power and glory. The views of the surrounding area are breathtaking.
The Castle is located in a wonderful forest/park outside of Sintra. While you can hop the tourist bus from the main train/bus station to the entrance to the Castle, you will have to walk a fair distance to get to the actual ruins. Once there, please be careful!! These are actual ruins we're talking about complete with uneven surfaces and no guard rails. As you are high above the countryside, falling would be a very bad thing. If you are visiting more than one attraction in Sintra, combo tickets are available. |
