Moonridge Animal Park Big Bear Lake Reviews
Alpine Zoo - Safe Haven for Animals Dec 27, 2008
In the afternoon we decided to head for the Moonridge Animal Park to see the animals. It turned out to be a nice way to spend a couple hours.
This animal park originated as a result of a serious forest fire in 1959. After the fire, many injured wild animals could not be released succesfully back into the wild because they had become used to being around humans.
Releasing them could pose a danger both to the animals and to human beings in the area. This animal park was thus born as a place where such animals could be provided with a safe home. In addition, it is a care and rehabilitation facility for animals that are found wounded or orphaned... Here they can be cared for and hopefully released back into the wild. The park has a 50 year lease granted at their present facility. This will be over in 2010, so it looks like they are working on finding a new location.
I found this to be a worthwile visit. We went with my daughter and young nieces. They all enjoyed seeing the animals, were able to learn a little about many species in the local area and some from other areas that were brought to the area as pets, etc. We stayed there for about two hours, looking at all the animals, reading information posted throughout the park and were able to listen to a guide who was feeding some of the animals and gave explanations about them. The animal enclosures rely heavily on chain link fences which doesn't look too great, but I hope that at their new location they can figure out a nicer way to keep the animals contained.
General admission costs $9.00. For children 3 - 10 the cost is $6.00 and senior citizens also pay $6.00. The money you pay goes to a good cause! There is also a small shop with books, souvenirs, postcards, etc.
