Moonlight Cinema Sydney
Moonlight Cinema Sydney Reviews
Movie-viewing under the stars Mar 11, 2013
I was really excited about going to the cinema under the stars to see Silver Linings Playbook. The tickets cost about $19 each online. If you book online you are guaranteed a entry ticket but it adds a $1 service fee per ticket. This might seem expensive but it is as expensive as the regular cinemas in Sydney's CBD.
It takes about 25 minutes to walk here from Central Station.
The open air cinema runs through Australia's summer season from the middle of December until the end of March. It is not open the rest of the year.
The cinema shows a variety of different movies from old school flicks such as Grease and To Kill a Mockingbird to the contemporary, recent cinema releases.
We had a bit of trouble finding the cinema as Centennial Parklands where it is located is pretty large and bathed in darkness at night with no lights to guide your way. There were also no signs or notices to lead your way to the cinema. The track leading up to it from the entrance we went in was dark and almost treacherous. My boyfriend almost fell a few times by tripping over tree roots growing under the gravel.
When we arrived the ushers and people working there didn't even look at our tickets that i had paid for but were just urging people to find places to sit as they were 'overbooked'. They didn't give us any help in finding us places to sit on the grass.
People everywhere were sprawled out drinking beers, wine, soft drinks and nibbling on picnics specially arranged for the night. Some preemptive souls also brought fold-up canvas chairs with them.
The movie started about 20 minutes late as they were trying to clear the queue of people waiting for food at the few food vans within the cinema area.
Watching the film under the Sydney stars and with a view of the city's metropolis (because you're on a hill) is gorgeous and beautifully atmospheric. The sound and quality of the film is great. Every few minutes a cheeky bat will fly metres above you.
It's definitely a good experience.
