Animals Asia is a Hong Kong based charity organization which maintains a Black Bear Rescue Center in Xindu District,a suburb of Chengdu (western China). The China Bear Rescue is their major project aiming to end bear farming in China. So far, they have received 219 rescued bears at their site.
Open Day Tours at the Bear Rescue Center are held on two Saturdays a month, during which visitors are specially guided around the sanctuary by staff members. In these tours lasting about 1.5 hours, you are informed about the situation bears suffer from on bile farms, the use of bear bile in medicine, and the process of recovery bears undergo from their arrival at the sanctuary. Visitors are shown around the site to see the bears embracing their new lives in their present enclosures. The sanctuary is located about one hour drive from Chengdu City. A pick-up service is offered for RMB 100 ($US13) per person (including return) or RMB 550 for a whole 29-seat bus, but you are not charged any entrance fee. As the center is not fully open to the public yet, visitors need to book in advance. To get an overview about Animals Asia's work, feel free to have a look at www.animalsasia.org.
