Commemorating a sad incidence Oct 08, 2016
Close to the Czech-German border, high up on the plateau near the main crest of the Ore mountains between Fojtovice and Fürstenau at the hiking/cycling trail, is a monument for the victims of the Death march in 1945. Background is that in the last months of WWII concentration camps in Germany evacuated to camps in the (nowadays) Czech Republic. The prisoners had to march hundreds of km without enough food, in poor health. Some of those marches ran over the Ore mountains.

This monument commemorates the prisoners who died here. According to the plaque on the monument they didn't die of exhaustion or sickness, but were beaten to death. Time for a rest and reflexion during your hike or cycling trip, I'd say!
