Montpellier is the regional capital of the region Languedoc-Roussillon and the fastest growing town in France (at the Moment 391 162 inhabitants).

With its unique mix of students from all over the world (43% of the population is under 30 years old) it offers a vivid atmosphere and especially in summer the streets are filled with people sitting in cafés listing to the many musicians.

The historical center is beautiful, with the central Place de la Comedie, a place surrounded by bars, the theater, and in the middle, the Foutain "des trois Graces", an then many small streets with shops, restaurants, bars, and many small squares and places.

Its only 10 km to the Mediterranean coast and the transport system is for French circumstances very good and expenses are less than in the posh cities of the Côte d'Azur.

Pros about France: -the bread is superb -you can walk down any street and find said bread in about 3 different locations -they have better cheese -they say funny things like "oohhh la la" - really, they actually do say that -every city here is infinitely more walkable than pretty much every american city -system of public transportation is WAY better...trains, buses, trams...we should learn from the europeans -"drinking age" is 18, but i've never actually seen them card anybody...they...

Due to the nice people at IBM myself and some colleages had a quick trip to Montpellier. Unfortunallity the majority of the time was spent in IBM's Products & solutions Support Center on the Outskirts. But there was a nice Hotel and 2 good restaurants to review.

We spent 3 days at Montpellier, in France. I love this city, I spent a lot of my holidays there and the near beaches (Palavas-Les-Flots, La Grande-Motte, Frontignan, Marseillan-Plage, Le Grau du Roi...)

Even in winter Montpellier is such a beautiful town ...all the small are illuminated by Xmas lights hanging over the streets and though you will never have white Christmas the mulled wine is as enjoyable as ever. The Christmas market is pretty small and seems kind of missplaced in Southern France but can be still fun to explore witha couple of friends.
