The Trail of Francisco Vásquez de Coronado Jun 01, 2010
Hiking is a great outdoor activity, it becomes even more exciting when it includes a trail with history. The Montezuma Canyon trail is located about 20 miles south of Sierra Vista in the Coronado National Park. In this region, is the 5000 acre reservation dedicated to explorer Francisco Vásquez de Coronado, the first European to explore the area.

Mark, decided to take us hiking to the Montezuma Canyon where he insisted we would be wowed. True to his word, I was absolutely taken by the beauty of the canyon. At an altitude of a little over 6,000 ft, the preserve is quite a sight to see.

At the top of the mountain, the trail head to a quarter mile trail begins. The trail has stops with benches overlooking the great canyon with plaques on which a 50 year history of the exploration is explained. In the year 1540 Coronado left Compostela, Mexico with 700 men in search of the lost Seven Cities of Cíbola. The cityies of Cibola were believed to be rich in gold, other minerals and jewels.

How to get there:

From Sierra Vista head south on highway 92 to South Coronado Memorial Drive. Continue for 5 miles until you get to the visitor center. At the visitor center, you can learn about Coronado's fruitless quest for riches. We did not go into the visitor center, but found all the history about the exploration right up the mountain where a dedicated quarter mile trail is dedicated to Coronado.

From the visitor center, there is a 1,000 ft elevation gain as you drive up to 6,575-foot Montezuma Pass, which is in the center of the memorial and provides far-reaching views of Sonora, Mexico, to the south, the San Pedro River to the east, and several mountain ranges and valleys to the west. Along the .8-mile round-trip Coronado Peak Trail, you'll also have good views of the valley and can read quotations from the journals of Coronado's followers. There are also some longer trails where you'll see few other hikers.

We did not take any of the longer hikes as the heat of high noon was rather much. For the months of June - September, you may want to hike very early morning before the sun gets too hot. Carry plenty of fluids to keep hydrated. Do not forget to bring your camera, the views are to die for.
