Since we didn't want to miss our bus at 6:30 AM, we grabbed a cab at 6:00. After a 5min drive, the cab driver wanted to charge us $5. However, he hadn't met my girlfriend before and she made him very clear, in fluent Spanish, that he could f*** off. He wanted to drive off immediately, afraid of the…

A master in the art of living draws no sharp distinction between his work and his play; his labor and his leisure; his mind and his body; his education and his recreation. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence through whatever he is doing, and leaves others to determine whether he is working or playing. To himself, he always appears to be doing both.

We got the jeep-boat-jeep on a misty rainy morning from La Fortuna to Monteverde. The first jeep was a crap minibus, hardly the 4-wheel drive we were expecting. The boat ride took us across the beautiful lake at the base of Volcan Arenal , although the wildlife-enriched banks of the river, the…

Spent my first night in Costa Rica in Liberia , a cattle town not too far from the border . Seemed to be hit by a wave of over-tiredness when I arrived ... think the exertions of the past few days on Ometepe have caught up on me, so all I could manage was a quick walk into the main plaza (past…

Monteverde, Costa Rica and the cloud forest area. Apparently there are two main seasons in Monteverde, rainy and very rainy! There is a little sunshine mixed into that but to be honest it was too few and far between to really count. I imagined Monteverde to be a lot bigger than the small village we…

After a night of being quite ill, I came to the conclusion I wouldn't be able to go on the tour of the cloud forest this morning, and would be best to spend my time in bed resting and recovering and trying to stay hydrated. Martin knocked on the door at 07.00 to see if I was coming on the tour, but…
