If you're in the Garden of Eden paradise that is Monteverde, then you should stop off at the cheese factory. It started in the 50's when a family of Quakers came down from the States to avoid being drafted into the army. They bought a huge tract of land in the hills and started the company from scratch. Mondeverde Cheese collects milk from local farmers and processes everything in their factory. Although the company has grown substantially since it first started, it doesn't compare in size with the South/Central American dairy company Dos Pinos. So support the small guy! Monteverde Cheese produces cheese, milk and ice cream and samples of their cheeses are provided during the tour. Their collection process, quality control lab procedures and cheese making process is explained and you get to see the nuts and bolts of the factory's machines. Pretty cheap and a nice change of pace from eco-tours. Two tours a day - 9 am and 2 pm.

Monteverde cheese is some of the best in Costa Rica, and many who visit the town take a guided tour of the cheese factory there. Melvin told us a very cute story about a group of children in Sweden who decided to raise money to help preserve the cloud forests. They got their money matched and donated everything to buying more… Cloud forests, hummingbird gallery, Melvin Rockwell |
